How the application works

To study in the United Arab Emirates, international students need a student residence visa.

As a rule:

• the visa is issued for the length of your studies (most often one year)

• it is renewed each year while you continue studying

• it is usually arranged through the educational institution

Types of student visa

How to apply for a student visa

1. Admission to an educational institution

• you first need official enrolment

• the educational institution acts as your sponsor

2. Submitting documents

The process is usually started by the educational institution.

Documents may be submitted through:

• the ICA online systems

• or the GDRFA system

In practice:
most universities submit the documents on the student's behalf

3. Handing over your documents

Typically the student:

• sends the required documents to the university

• and the educational institution then submits the visa application

• proof of tuition payment

• health insurance

• medical examination (on arrival)
